Pros & Cons

  • Variety of departments and breadth of learning opportunities.
  • Culture.
  • The company places a lot of focus on improvement - they're never complacent where they are. This means that although they have to maintain certain standards in some areas, they continually try to innovate and be creative in other areas.
  • The size of the company is great. It's not small but not too big either so that there is a familiar feel to it and you can get insights into many different areas.
  • The people and the culture.
  • Outdated systems.
  • Some in-house processes and technologies aren't up to speed with how quickly the company is trying to innovate which makes it difficult sometimes. Communication across departments and to all staff isn't always the best either.
  • The office in Mount Waverley is not easily accessible by public transport.
  • The exposure to food! Our canteen is basically a 7-Eleven store with free Slurpee. If you don't have the self control, you can expect weight gain (around 7 - 11 kgs).

Most grads proceed to coordinator roles initially. I haven't seen evidence of grads being promoted in preference to other candidates but the most senior ex-grads are only two years out of the program.

7-Eleven is taking a leading role in cup recycling in Australia by working with Simply Cups to save takeaway cups from going to landfill.

Culture

Culture
Overall the culture is quite good. Everybody is really friendly and from what I have experienced, there isn't a massive hierarchical climate at work. The workplace is also not highly formal which suits me well. Teamwork and cooperation are encouraged - everyone is always willing to answer questions if you need help and I've never experienced any competitive nature between co-workers in my current position. Socialising is encouraged however we don't have consistent out-of-hours catch ups as a team.

Diversity

Diversity
I'm aware there are measures of diversity at 7-Eleven but don't believe there are programs which actively seek applicants from ethnic minorities. There could be work with child care etc.

At the moment and while I'm in Retail Operations, I am acting as a Retail Business Manager. This is similar to a District Manager but with more of a partnership perspective with franchisees. What I do is essentially coach franchisees to grow their business by meeting with them throughout the week to analyse sales data, review financials for opportunities, implement top-down initiatives in store, and ensure compliance with 7-Eleven standards as well as legal standards. The job also entails a lot of relationship management and problem solving.

Management
Most of my managers book in weekly or fortnightly meetings. They're readily available via the phone or email. So there's no communication issue. It's really up to you as to whether you make the most of it. We're also assigned a career mentor who we catch up with monthly to discuss any challenges, learning and how we're tracking overall. Importantly, they help you determine the right skills to develop for where you want to head in the company when you apply for a full time role.

The location is great in Mt Waverley - easy to get to against peak hour traffic. Dress code is business casual. Good onsite canteen with products at cost price.

Comparable when you consider hours/pressure and risks however. Recently went to the Australian Open with the team on a Friday!

A lot of investment in training, e.g. Excel & Outlook training, presentation skills, defensive driving.

Depends on the manager and it comes down to trust. They're usually pretty flexible for you to leave earlier if you need to be somewhere. As long as you get your work done, you're fine!

The emphasis on cup recycling externally has been fantastic.
