Pros & Cons

  • The people are great! It's a super collaborative environment which makes it perfect for learning as a grad. Most people aren't from Sydney which also means it's easy to make friends.
  • There is an awesome culture, everyone is super supportive, they give you a lot of responsibility and trust straight away.
  • Interesting domain, intelligent people, great perks (breakfast, lunch, dinner, multiple excursions etc.)
  • IMC provides many employee benefits and care about the well-being of their employees. The culture at IMC is also very different from the usual HFT firms. There are also a lot of opportunities to collaborate with other offices in various challenging projects. IMC gives a lot of support to charity foundations which help tackle different world problems such as education, primary needs and health care.
  • Responsibility is given to employees as they start out - it's a great way to prove your talent. Grads are often recognised for their contributions. Hard work, clever thinking and collaboration are at the centre of the culture The work is intellectually stimulating and challenging - there is never a boring day at work.
  • Can be stressful at times, but comes with the job.
  • Trading can introduce stress sometimes. But that's the nature of trading.
  • We have abundant of food, which more often than not gets thrown away once they are expired.
  • Slightly flat hierarchy makes it difficult to ascertain certain career pathways.
  • Sometimes leftover overnight food is thrown away.

Career Prospects
The company has a merit-based structure, where the quality of the idea is considered most important. Over time, employees are given more and more responsibility and they are able to apply their skills to bigger projects, which may lead to more formal responsibilities.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
The company runs a "Charity" day where all the revenues from the day go to a charity to promote literacy across the world. The company has stated its efforts to compensate its energy emission by buying carbon offsets. I believe they've offset twice the amount of carbon that they've produced in the past ten years or so. Other days which employees are encouraged to participate in include a day where employees come to work in fancy dress - for every person who participates the company donates a certain sum to a children's charity.

Culture

Culture
The company culture is great, hands down the best place that I have interned or worked at. The workplace has expectations to continuously improve yourself and support you in areas you highlight but also allows you to unwind and get to know colleagues outside of work hours through casual interactions and planned events.

Diversity

Diversity
The company does an admirable effort in promoting and encouraging women in a field that is overwhelmingly male, although a male bias is still present in some sectors. Its employees are very ethnically diverse and (to my knowledge) there is no discrimination on lines of ethnicity or gender with regards to retention or promotion.

I work in the valuation team, creating software to value shares and other financial products in real time using some advanced techniques. I have a high degree of autonomy in completing projects. They are all highly impactful to the business.

Management
My manager is great. He's very easy to talk to and gives me lots of opportunities to develop and grow in areas that I'm interested (which he makes sure that I am interested by checking with me). He's been a pleasure to work with.

Great facilities overlooking the harbour and opera house, with an extremely well stocked kitchen. Dress code is very casual, jeans/T shirt is standard (trackies and thongs can be gotten away with).

Amazing onboarding programming when you join as a graduate. The company spares no expense when it comes to the training schools to make sure that graduate joiners get the most out of it. There are lots of opportunities to both network and learn and the lectures that teach about how technology works at IMC are great.

Work Hours
Normal 9-5 hours for software engineers. Some people work more because they really enjoy their work. No face-time culture. Your hours are flexible if you get your work done.

There are some people who are in charge of looking at IMC's environmental footprint in each office. I think we also donate quite a large sum of money to offset our carbon footprint globally (If I remember correctly, it's around double the amount we should be contributing).
